City and Guilds Technical Award in Hair and Beauty Studies

Year 10

In Year 10 students' journey into the hair and beauty industry starts with a brief introduction into safety in the salon. Their journey takes them on an in-depth look at the science behind hair and beauty including biology and chemistry: it starts with an in-depth look at the anatomy of the hair, skin and nails and the chemistry of how products and ingredients used in hair and beauty products work, depending on their PH and other properties.

They learn about careers within the industry and service and treatments provided in hair salons, barber shops, nail bars, spas and beauty therapy salons. Students will learn to recognise hair, skin and nail conditions that could affect workplace treatments and services and learn how to respond in these situations.

Students will learn the basic technical skills needed to plait, set and blow-dry hair, cleanse tone and moisturise the skin in preparing to apply make-up.

The course will take them on a journey through time looking at hair and make-up trends from Ancient Japan to the 1990’s, looking at the technological advancements within the history of the industry leading on to learn about design imagery as a hair and beauty business, marketing events and promoting services and products.

At the end of Year 10 students will sit their theory exam.

Year 11

This year students will continue their journey through time looking at hair and make-up trends from Ancient Japan to the 1990’s, delving further into the technological advancements within the industry leading on to learn about design imagery as a hair and beauty business, marketing events and promoting services and products.

The students will put into practice skills learnt to date as well as learning the art of applying make-up. Students will be given an era to research discussing the fashion trends and technological advancements while preparing for the synoptic assignment. The assignment will be issued in February for students to research, plan and create a design image based on a set theme, demonstrating their skills in hair, make-up and nails.

The final assignments and design images will be uploaded to City and Guilds. This grade will be added to the theory exam marks and put towards their final grade.

Both theory and practical synoptic will be externally moderated and levels awarded Pass, Merit, Distinction and Distinction*
