Pupil Premium

The Pupil Premium is a sum of money the school receives for students who are either in receipt of free school meals or have been eligible in the last 6 years.

The school also receives additional funding for any student who is in public care. The reason for this funding is that, nationally, the statistics show that Pupil Premium students do less well than their peers in external examinations.

The aim of this money is to reduce the gap in attainment. The percentage of students, at KES, who are eligible for Pupil Premium funding is similar in each year group, around 30% of students.

As a result of our interventions;

  • The gap between students eligible for Pupil Premium funding, and those who are not has narrowed. We are closing the gap. This is reflected in our teacher assessment as well as P8 score.
  • The attendance of students eligible for Pupil Premium funding has increased.
  • Attainment of students eligible for Pupil Premium is tracked throughout their time at KES in order to continue to close the gap (between students eligible for Pupil Premium and their peers).

Please contact Mr Feeley if you require further information with regards to the interventions in place for students eligible for Pupil Premium funding.

Examples of interventions for students eligible for Pupil Premium funding:

  • 1-1 and small group tuition for English and Maths.
  • Focussed mentoring.
  • Registration break-out sessions for English, Maths and Science.
  • ‘Wanna be an Entrepreneur’ trip. Students worked on a range of entrepreneurial skills including giving motivational talks to a group of peers.
  • Break out days such as Maths and Art day. Students worked together to carry out a number of activities, based on maths skills. Students increased their maths skills, confidence, and social skills.

The review of our Pupil Premium Strategy is ongoing, however we more formally measure the impact, and make any adjustments required on an annual basis, usually in September.
