KES runs a number of courses which are suitable for students of all abilities. Whether a student prefers a more hands-on approach to learning, or excels at academic study, there is something for everyone. Student applications are dealt with, on an individual basis and take into account the aptitude and attitude of the student as well as their exam results.

A Levels

A Levels are traditional qualifications which are studied over two years. From September 2017, all A Levels will be linear in design. this means they are examined at the end of the two years. At the end of the first year, students will be entered for the AS examination which is used to assess their performance in the first year's work. This normally must be passed in order to progress on to the second year, however, the marks received will no longer count towards the final grade.

BTEC courses are vocational qualifications. This means that they are related to a particular career area. So for example, a BTEC qualification in Sport will prepare a student for work or further study in the field of Sport. BTEC qualifications are practical, assignment-based qualifications, and there are no final examinations as coursework is continuously assessed. They are suitable therefore for those who:

  • Do not always do their best work in examinations
  • Enjoy coursework
  • Enjoy practical work
  • Want to find out more about working in a particular industry

BTEC qualifications are available at three levels and can be short or long, depending on how many units are taken. The table below shows the qualifications which are available at KES’ Sixth Form, their levels and what they are equivalent to:
